Food Review for Pit Spot

Pit spot is one of the newest restaurants in the ever increasing eating spots in Lagos, located in Victoria Island. I like the environment. It’s definitely not a market place. Quiet residential area. I love it. It is a mix of healthy living with the bicycles for making your own smoothies (check their IG) and gym upstairs. They have a vegetarian menu too! Not my thing but it’s worth mentioning.

Let’s get into the food. I started with the tomato juice and bread cubes with a side of bread. Pegged for vegetarians but I really think non-vegans can enjoy it. You won’t miss the meat. The soup could have been thicker though.

Then I had the lightly charred dumplings. OMG, the explosion of flavours…. it had so much flavours and herbs that I couldn’t begin to pick them out. Really great. The scorched part added flavour to it, with mince meat and all. Awesome.

I had a glass of pinacolada. Alcoholic pinacolada. I was a bit pissed cos I don’t drink and it was not indicated that it had alcohol. It was after that I noticed everyone had alcoholic drinks.

After fuming, we got a big bowl of pasta with meatballs and cheese. Tasty as hell. I could taste the tomato sauce used in the pasta and nice mince meat for the meatballs. The spices used in the meatballs could be increased though.

Next dish was roasted broccoli with a base of cheese. I personally LOVE cheese, so I might be a little bit biased. The first taste was nice, the broccoli was soft and chewy with a mouthful of cheese. Yum! They had half of a lime in the place. Too big to be decorative. I’m not sure it was meant to be squeezed in. It would have totally messed up the cheese.

Up next, I had what I actually ordered for; sweet potatoes with Jollof sauce, gizdodo and spicy wings. The Jollof sauce took me back to the streets of Lagos with the oil from fried stew keeping it local and mayonnaise making it creamy and keeping it hunny. The Gizdodo is the best I’ve ever had. Maybe I’m biased because I LOVE soft, ripe plantain. So, soft, ripe plantain with squares of yellow and green pepper with caramelised onions and gizzard. The chef killed it with this one. He ratio of gizzard to plantain could have been increased but it was great! Spicy wings were indeed spicy. Yoruba level spicy. Tasty too.

Finally, dessert. Dessert was carrot cake with lined with cheese and a dollop of pawpaw ice cream. I’ve had a bad run in with carrot cake, so I was prepared to be disappointed. Guess who was pleasantly surprised. Me, of course. I don’t sincerely think that the pawpaw ice cream should have left the kitchen but here we are. It wasn’t out of place when eaten with the carrot cake, so I guess it’s okay.

That’s all on food at Pit Spot. They have the ambience thingy on lock so I don’t need to comment on that. It’s really a great place.
